A Memoir of a Butterfly

By Mona Ayoub

She is suffocating in her tight capsule. The air is getting so thin.
She sees nothing but darkness, and feels nothing but pain.
Strings are tightly wrapped around her body.
She screams to no avail.
She resists…pushes herself against her bonds trying to break free…
When she believed that there’s no way out, she stood still silently, waiting for her death …
But Suddenly….*

He’s suffocating. The air is getting so thin.
Hunger is tearing his worn body.
He built his tent on the ruins of his (once so beautiful) house, where his wife and child used to live….
Five years ago, he vowed to always protect her and to never leave her in happiness and sorrow. He couldn’t protect her the other day… at least he is keeping his promise to never leave her (or her body).
An armed fighter passes by. He now knows them all by name, one by one.
The fighter kindly salutes him.
He thought of asking him for some food, but said instead:  “When is the help of Allah?”
The fighter smiled: “The help of Allah is near”.
He’s been waiting for Allah’s help for too long
He looks upwards. Dark clouds are covering the sky. He cannot see the sun
And Suddenly…

*She broke free from her cocoon to become a beautiful butterfly …
She is soaring now…. Celebrating her freedom
